    COLLEGE BASEBALL: UTPB to face UT-Tyler in LSC tournament opening series

    The UTPB baseball team will host UT-Tyler in a best-of-three series in the opening round of the Lone Star Conference tournament this week.

    Game one will take place at 3 p.m. Friday at Roden Field while game two will be at 1 p.m. Saturday and, if necessary, game three will start at 1 p.m. Sunday.

    The Falcons (30-20 overall, 28-20 in the Lone Star Conference) enter as the No. 4 seed while UT-Tyler (28-21, 28-20) is the No.

    WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has been imprisoned in London for five years, while Texas journalist Priscilla Villarreal was only briefly detained at the Webb County Jail. But both were arrested for publishing information that government officials wanted to conceal.

    Assange and Villarreal argue that criminalizing such conduct violates the First Amendment. In both cases, the merits of that claim have been obscured by the constitutionally irrelevant question of who qualifies as a “real” journalist.

    BBQ teams hope to make impact at state

    Led by New Tech Culinary Instructor Christina Acosta, two barbecue teams are heading to Round Rock for the High School BBQ Inc. competition May 3 and 4 at the Dell Diamond.

    Acosta said 13 students are making the trip while also preparing for their upcoming banquet.

    Acosta said they will be cooking dessert, beans, chicken, ribs and brisket.

    The Odessa College softball team is just one win away from a third consecutive Western Junior College Athletic Conference title.

    Two wins if the Lady Wranglers don’t want to share it with Midland College.

    Considering that Odessa College is on a nine-game winning streak, head coach Doug Eastman and his players have plenty of reasons to feel good going into this week’s regular season final series against Frank Phillips College on the road.

    DELL CITY The National Park Service (NPS) invites public thoughts and ideas on the initial stages of a frontcountry management planning process for Guadalupe Mountains National Park. The goal of this planning effort is to establish long-term direction for resource protection and visitor experiences in the park’s frontcountry, as well as develop high-level concepts to guide potential future facility investments and build climate resiliency, a news release said.

  • Ward County train derailment
    Ward County train derailment

    Texas Highway Patrol Troopers and Ward County Deputies responded at approximately 3 p.m. Wednesday to a train derailment involving approximately 20 train cars at IH-20 Mile Marker 63 in Ward County, a Texas Department of Public Safety news release said.

    This derailment did not occur due to a motor vehicle crash; no injuries have been reported. In addition, none of the train cars involved contained hazardous materials.

    Union Pacific has been notified, and railroad personnel are on the scene.

    Given the lack of action by the governor and legislature on school funding, Ector County ISD Superintendent Scott Muri said the district is frustrated and disappointed that public school has not been adequately funded.
